RE: First Time Buyer...Updated 03/06/2006

"We'll be towing her '08 Jeep liberty, most likely on a dolly." I have a 2007 Jeep Wrangler and I tow 4 wheels down. The Jeep liberty has basically the same drive train and it can be towed 4 wheels down, no tow dolly necessary. I also use a brake buddy (I bought it used) with a transmitter and receiver. It works great and I would recommend getting the transmitter/receiver and the breakaway switch.

RE: Blocks for under the leveling Jacks.

I built a deck on the back of the "stick" house using the "Trex" plastic or composite lumber. With the piecies I had left over I cut some pieces into 1"X6"X16" pieces and drilled a hole in the end for the awning rod. They work very well and they have not yet crushed or rotted. :B

RE: GPS systems

HobbyHauler, I have been using the Garmin GPS units for a long time. I started with the GPSIII and now have the Nuvi 5000. One thing I found when I had the Streetpilot 2610 was that if I had more than one version of the City navigator on the unit and on the computer program, the unit frequently gave me confusing directions. It would direct me to exit or enter the freeway where there was no entrance or exit. I blew away all the versions and then reloaded only the latest version. I also made sure the unit itself had the latest version of the software from the Garmin website. That took care of the funky directions. With the Nuvi 5000 I had version 7 of the City Navigator and when I contacted Garmin they sent me version 8 in the mail. When Version 9 came out this year I was able to download it at no charge. I would like to say that I have always had great service from the Garmin people no matter what the issue might have been.

RE: 6.8-8.1 Fuel milage

I have the 6.8L (ford F53 chasis). On a recent trip, pulling my 4 door jeep (4100#) and running the generator for the coach air on a over 1700 mile trip I averaged about 7.1 mpg.

RE: Coffee pots!

We have a older Winniebago and it has a Black & Decker Coffee maker that mounts under the cabinet above the dinette. It is a 12 cupper and is soooo slow. I start the coffee maker and take the dog out for a loooong walk in the morning. I bought a new Black and Decker under counter mount and it is not a direct replacement fit. When the existing one goes I will have to do a bit of woodworking to make it both fit and to look as if it belongs. We also store the carafe when traveling and don't ask how I discovered how this was a good thing to do.:S

RE: What could be better about your Motorhome??

I do believe that a few manufacturers that use the workhorse UFO chases make an entry that is not exactly in the center but it is not front entry either. The Winniebago Destination and the Itasca Latitude both offer the Chevy gas engine or a diesel for the chases. Regarding the covers for the stove and sink we like the additional counter space it provides and only uncover the sinks or stove when they are being used.I would not buy a coach without slidouts. We like the extra room and not haveing to squeeze by each other when passing from front to back

RE: Why no TV while moving??

Could I be misteakin here or was the original intent of the blogger to ask why the kids in the back bedroom or another area not available to the driver be ok for tv viewing? I think we all realize that only a moron would attempt to watch TV while driving a big rig down the road.

RE: Another Camping World Service survey

We just got back from a trip to St Augustine Florida. We met some friends there who are from Chicago. They have 2006 Pace Arrow that they bought new last year. They had a problem with thier AC. The roof AC quit working during the night. They called thier dealer in the Chicago area and were told to take it to the CW facility in St Augustine as they were an authorized Fleetwood dealer. They called CW and were told that they were pretty well backed up with coaches already and it mite be an all day wait for them to get it looked at. They were also told they (CW) mite not have parts too. My friends brought the coach in and to our surprise the CW people took it in right away. It turned out to be a faulty thermostat and they had the part in stock . We went to lunch and when we came back the coach was ready. The service was great and the people were very pleasant to deal with.

RE: Consignment Purchases

I previously owned a pop up camper and "upgraded" to a class a motor home. I went to a consignment dealer. They sold my pop up and I purchased a motor home from them. It was a very pleasant experience on both the sale and purchase arrangements. The link for the site is: http://www.jpsrvs.com/

RE: GPS - Garmin or Tomtom for avoiding interstates?

I have had a Garmi 2610 for several years and had been very satisfied with it. The nice thing about it is that you can custom program routes on the computer and download the route to the unit. When I first got it I had a major problem and in talking to Garmin tech support (located in Kansas and speaking English) they got me "squared away " wit it. It seems that I had different versions of the mapping program on mapsource program on the computer and it was confusing the GPS. The Garmin rep had the newest version of the program sent to me at no cost to me. I just recently upgraded to the new Garmin Nuvi 5000 and will use it on my upcoming trip to Florida in the motorhome. The unit will except pre programmed routes downloaded from the computer and has a fantastic large screen. There is a learning curve to use all the features as the system is very different from my 2610.

RE: 1999 vs 2000 winnebago's?

I have a winnie 20000 adventurer 35U with the basement ac/heat pump. The system works great in both the AC mode and when necessary the heat mode. The bed is above the unit and we really don't notice the sound although there is some small constant noise from it. Tha added bonus as others have mentioned is that there is no water dripping down the side. I also can run it with just the 30 amp service.:B One other thing is that the 2000 comes with 2 slides while the 1999 (I think) comes with only one. I tow a 4100# Jeep Wrangler.

RE: 2008 Workhorse UFO gas pushers

I do believe that a Motor Home Magazine did an article on the destination 39W. Both engines (as most of us know) are rear engine pushers. The article said that the gas engine was a bit sluggish when compared to the diesel. Another article in another magazine said the gas engine was a bit more peppier (I think). As far as mileage is concerned I probably would not put on more than 9000-10000 miles a year anyway so longevity would not be a big issue. I think if I were in a buying mood I would opt for the 37 footer instead. having said that, I have read on the IRV2 forum that the interior of the destination is a bit of a downgrade from the adventurer interior. Ya pays yer money an ya takes yer chances

RE: 02 Adventurer 32v vs 05 Sightseer 30b

I bought a used 2000 Adventurer 35U from a place that sold units on consignment. I was looking at a 2000 Adventurer 33V and we opted for the 35U as it was much more roomier with the 2 slide outs. I was able to drive the unit and have a professional inspect the unit prior to buying it. Some of the items of note were the new tires, new shocks, new coach batteries and the guy selling it threw in the blue ox tow bar plus he was able to tell me the mainenance history of the coach. We put about 4000 miles on it from from purchasing it in aug of last year(2007) and prior to leaving on trips this year I had a shop service the engine, transmission, generator, differential, brakes, roof, and engine air conditioner. I will be purchasing a new chassis battery also. The engine, transmission, and generator were just routine maintenance items and the brake pads were maby good for another year but I would rather be safe than sorry. For what I paid for the coach I didn't mind spending for the maintenance just for peace of mind

RE: Cruise control quit...

Ford Motor Co has a recall on regarding the cruise control on the F53 chasis. I think the vintage of the chasis is from 1997-2002 F53 chasis. I have a 2000 Winniebago with the F53 chasis. I called Winniebago and they gave me the 800# to call at Ford Motor Co. You will need your VIN# when you call. The person you speak to can tell you if the recall on your cruise control had been done. They will also give you the name of a dealer close to you that has the parts. My coach is a class A and the some dealers have the recall parts for the class A coaches but the class C coach parts are on back order. Replacement takes about 20 minutes and one of the parts is a fuse link(I think). That may or may not be the problem with the cruise control on your coach. The recall is free and the People at Ford Motor Co. were VERY helpful.

RE: What Gas Grill Do you carry?

I bought the Weber Baby Q for the PUP. I also bought the cast iron griddle. I Upgraded from the PUP to a MH last year and took the BabyQ with me. I like the fact that you can close the top when grilling but some Coleman roadmate(?) owners claimed you can close the lid on that too. I love the way it cooked but the cast iron griddle was a pain in the but to use and clean. I bought a Presto electric griddle for the breakfast stuff (eggs, bacon, potatoes, pancakes, etc...$19 on sale at Macy's). I also found that the metal retaining ring on the BabyQ was a hindrance as it only fit the smaller propane bottles and had to be removed to use the 16Oz bottles. I recently bought ( at Campers world on sale) an 11# propane tank and appropriate hose connection (6'). I got tired of fooling with the 16Oz propane bottles and running out of propane at most inopportune times. With the PUP you could put a T fitting on the propane tank and get a longer hose. I like the 11# tank as it gives me the option to move the grill wherever I want to and not be restricted by hose length plus with a gauge on the tank I know how much propane is left.
